Tartan Alphabet Machine
The Tartan Alphabet Machine is a code project that takes a word or simple phrase as a starting point, and analyses the width of each letter. It then algorithmically assigns a colour group to each width, and uses these combined outputs to create a unique tartan pattern.
For this series of prints, some of our favourite Ivor Cutler poem titles were used as the seed for the Tartan Alphabet Machine. A small spot illustration for each was created separately, and colours were chosen to reflect the poems’ themes: trees, bees, teas and chicken.
A5 Riso prints: Three colour (hunter green, burgundy and fluo orange). Printed on 250gsm natural paper
